Introduction
Blues musicians use a variety of instruments.
There are a few that are traditional and many others that sometimes show up in blues performances.
Guitar, harmonica, piano, bass, and drums are the main instruments used in blues.
Many other instruments are also used, like saxophone, trumpet, washboard, and mandolin. fiddle, and a variety of folk instruments.
Much of the early blues was created by whatever was available.
The Guitar is the Most Commonly Used Instrument in Blues Music
And the guitar is perhaps the most famous blues instrument.
Acoustic guitars and electrics are very common.
The electric guitar, in particular, the “slide guitar style,” is electric blues.
We hear of aspiring guitarists securing a length of wire. They glue it at one end and twist it down the side of a building. Then, they play it like a slide.
The Harmonica is Used in Blues Music
The harmonica is often referred to as a “blues harp.” It is a key instrument in many blues styles. This is particularly true in acoustic and country blues.
The harmonica was also a major instrument used in the Chicago Blues sound.
The Piano and Keyboards are Used in Blues Music
The piano plays a significant role in various blues subgenres. These include boogie-woogie and Chicago blues. Other keyboard instruments like the Hammond organ also contribute significantly.
The Bass is Used in Blues Music
The double bass was used in acoustic blues and traditional settings.
A double bass (stand-up bass) may offer the bass line instead of an electric bass guitar.
As technology developed, most bands switched to an electric bass guitar. This instrument provides the low-end foundation of the music. It is essential for maintaining the groove in blues bands.
The Bass is Used in Blues Music
Drum kits are used to offer rhythm and a driving beat to blues music.
The drumming style can vary from simple shuffles to more intricate patterns, depending on the subgenre,
Some Folk Instruments are Used in Blues Music
Blues has had the accompaniment of a washboard and a diddley bow, some folk instruments.
A washboard, played with thimbles or spoons, records the time.
It is a drum, which gives a rhythm and a percussion effect.
A diddley bow consists of a strip of wire wound across the tip of a bowed piece of wood. It is played with a slide and plectrum or finger.
One man who made diddley bows played them at one of the blues festivals I’d been to. I was fascinated.
The tools he showed us were equipped with a pickup, and thus electrified.
I didn’t have the spare money to buy one with me at the time but later that I tried to search for him online without success
There are a Variety of Other Instruments Used in Blues Music
Blues musicians used other, more traditional instruments.
The saxophone is often used in blues bands. It adds a rich and soulful texture to the music. The tenor and alto saxophones are particularly popular.
Trumpets were occasionally used in blues, especially in larger ensembles or when a horn section was employed.
The violin/fiddle was used in some regional blues styles, such s Delta Blues and Texas Blues,
The violin or fiddle can be used to add a unique flavor to the music.
Occasionally, the mandolin is used in acoustic blues, particularly in older country blues styles.
The lap steel guitar played with a steel slide is employed to create smooth and emotive slide guitar sounds in the blues
